Program Information

The MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) program can offer a productive and rewarding environment for social work practicum students to help develop professional competencies within a school setting. The program provides opportunities that prepare students for culturally responsive and equity-driven social work practice. Students will engage in culturally responsive interventions and services tailored to the needs of underrepresented and first-generation students in STEM, learning to apply strategies that support students from diverse backgrounds. They will also work to promote educational equity and access by identifying systemic barriers and collaborating with other programs and professionals to advocate for access to academic resources for students and families. Practicum students will develop skills in both individual and group interventions, facilitating support groups focused on academic motivation, personal growth, and emotional well-being. Students will strengthen their case management and referral skills by connecting students and families with school and community-based services and tracking progress using appropriate documentation tools. Additionally professional-level opportunities will be available such as mentorship, trainings, exposure to STEM-focused educational programming, participation in committees, and the use of data to inform best practice strategies.

School-based social work is dynamic in nature and a couple of key characteristics will benefit the student to maximize their learning. Flexibility is essential, as the school environment can shift rapidly between an academic schedules and student needs. The ability to adapt to both planned and spontaneous situations, such as responding to a student crisis or participating in impromptu team meetings is highly valued. Additionally, collaboration and a genuine interest in educational equity, cultural humility, social justice, and a commitment to supporting underrepresented students are foundational to success in our program.

Health & Safety

Overall, the MESA program encounters relatively few unusual risks, however practicum students may be asked to participate in off-campus events such as college visits, workshops, or community outreach, which could involve travel and supervision responsibilities. While these events are generally low-risk, they require flexibility, situational awareness, and adherence to school safety protocols.
