Organization Description

Southern California Alcohol & Drug Programs provides treatment services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons through Awakenings - a fully accessible residential recovery program. Opened in November, 1988, Awakenings was the first residential drug abuse treatment program for and by Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons in the United States. Awakenings provides a six to 12-month long treatment program delivered entirely in American Sign Language for Deaf men and women.  Located in Whittier, the program facility consists of four separate apartments with a total of 14 residential beds for men, and women. Awakenings added an additional ten transitional and permanent housing beds via a HUD grant.
