Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE)

Organization Description

Our vision is to help build a new economy rooted in good jobs, thriving communities and a healthy environment. Here in Los Angeles and in cities across the country, we are moving steadily toward that vision - recharging democracy through grassroots organizing and community-oriented policy. Change is indeed happening as we see and hear how organizing and policy really impact daily life for workers and working families. Yet so much more is possible. Los Angeles is marked by stark inequality, and we know how much lies ahead of us. We hope you can support our vision working toward economic equality, a cleaner environment, and thriving communities in our city and beyond.

Program Information

LAANE has several campaigns, one of which is in Long Beach (Long Beach for A Just Economy) -- has been doing work in our community for over 10 years. Using policy advocacy, research and organizing, the Coalition works to improve the lives of working families in Long Beach. We uplift volunteers and turn them into leaders through our civic engagement initiatives. And we partner and support a broad slate of Long Beach organizations, all working toward social justice goals.

Health & Safety

All service opportunities are 100% remote/virtual

We work with all community! Students will be expected to treat everyone with respect and community members will be expected to do the same. Interns will need to virtually check in with the supervisor and be available to join in person actions or events. Our goal is to work around everyone's schedule while also ensuring we meet both the projects goals, and the students minimum hourly requirement. There will be regular meetings interns will attend, but depending on when actions/activities are scheduled, interns will check in and out with their supervisor.

Interns will be required to check in at the beginning of a volunteer shift with our Community Organizer. This will include training and or additional context ahead of the days assignment. Interns will then go off to complete the assignment, logging work in a shared file that the supervisor will actively manage. Upon completion of the day's activities, interns will check out with their supervisor to ensure the correct logging of hours. Most of the work will be unsupervised. We give interns their assignments with an estimated time of how long it should take and then check in before and after their shift.
