Organization Description

The mission of the California Department of Fish and Game is to manage California’s diverse fish, wildlife, and plant resources, and the habitats upon which they depend, for their ecological values and for their use and enjoyment by the public.

Health & Safety

The work includes hiking long distances, and up / down steep terrain within the Big Sur Coast carrying packs and heavy equipment (up to 40 lbs) with the vast majority of work on public land (National Forest, State Parks, and County land). Surveys include backpack electrofishing (wearing waders) and snorkel surveys (wearing dry suits, mask and snorkel) in cold streams. Camping is required in campgrounds (car-camping). Also, backpacking is required to access remote stream locations for fisheries surveys.

The vast majority of work on public land (National Forest, State Parks, and County land).

Emily Campbell, CDFW Environmental Scientist, is the Project Lead and will be mentoring students and CDFW Scientific Aides on a daily basis. Kristine Atkinson, CDFW Senior Environmental Supervisor, is the supervisor for the Coastal Fisheries Team and oversee Human Resources (HR) issues and may delegate tasks beyond the ones that Emily is leading. This internship includes field work and potentially working long hours, getting back to the office after 6pm.
