Regis House Community Center shares the goal of the Sisters of Social Service to provide a nurturing environment for people living in the local community.  We believe that change can be accomplished by developing awareness and interest where the needs of the neighborhood are concerned.  It is our intention to help families help themselves by working directly with individuals and groups by offering quality educational and social programs, and by providing resources to assist and empower them.

 

Description of tasks students will engage in:

RHCC is located in the Westlake-Historic Filipino neighborhood near downtown Los Angeles. It is a social service community center offering a variety of serviced to walk-in clients, families and individuals. Students would most likely be invloved in the After School program working with youth ages 5-11 (TK-5th grades). Offering a courtesy walk from nearby chools, homework assistance, snack, club activities, field trips etc. The program runs Mon-Fri from 2pm-5:50pm. There are opportunites to also join RHCC staff on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month from 8:30am-11:30am for our bi-monthly Food Distribution serving approx. 50-60 households and providing fresh produce and non-perishable food items. The first Saturday of the month there is a yard sale where clothing, and household items are available for a nominal fee or at no cost. Some special events occur during the holiday season.

Depending on the students interest and availability summer day camp is a 6 week program that runs from mi-June through the end . of July. There is a stipend available for qualified students. The program focuses on providing a safe and nurturing environment for youth ages 6-13. Youth are grouped according to age. Each week has a special theme and an all camp outing. Youth ages 14-21 are trained as aday camp counselors (first aid, planning and implementation of activities, field trips, out and about on public transportation, crafts, swimming, overnight camping etc.
