The Donald & Beverly Gerth Special Collections & University Archives (SCUA) serves as the principal location for the historical research collections at California State University, Sacramento. The primary strengths of the collection are post-World War II political, social, and environmental history of the Sacramento region and the history of the California State University, Sacramento. The Department's holdings include printed books, literary and historical manuscripts, photographs, and university archives. Subject collections include the Japanese American Archival Collection (JAAC), the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection, the Mexican American community in the Sacramento region, the northern California Native American communities, and the Sexual and Gender Identity Collection. The University Library’s Special Collections are named after Donald and Beverly Gerth. The 10th President of Sacramento State from 1984-2003, Gerth enhanced the campus’ role as the “State University in the State Capital.” Our campus oral history, looking back on President Gerth’s time in office, contains more detailed information on The Center for California Studies, the development of centers of Research and Actions within state government and public policy, the emergence of the Department of Public Policy and Administration, and University Governance.

Sacramento City Unified School District is one of the oldest K-12 districts in the western United States (established in 1854). SCUSD serves 43,175 students on 75 campuses spanning 76 square miles.

SCUSD is home to a 2013 California Distinguished School (West Campus High School), the only public Waldorf-inspired high school in the nation (George Washington Carver) and the only Hmong language immersion program in the state (Susan B. Anthony Elementary School).

Alumni from SCUSD’s schools include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, nationally renowned political scholar Dr. Cornel West and author Joan Didion.
